Something new by the Fresh Pornographers, er…. I mean something fresh by the New Pornographers. Not much more than that to say today. Enjoy, and have a happy.

swell sunday

I admit it - I can be a bit of a sap every now and then. Tonight, on the 80th anniversary of the Oscars I got misty on more than one occasion as many of Hollywood’s memorable moments were revisited. None got me more choked up than the following moments, though. First, the performance of “Falling Slowly” by Marketa Irglova and Glen Hansard, aka Swell Season (a previous and way less formal version was posted on this site on 7/5/07), and the warm audience response. Then, their pleasantly surprising win and subsequent charming acceptance speeches. I was lucky enough to have seen them live in a pretty intimate venue a few months ago, and I can attest that they really are just that affable, personable, passionate, fun and deserving. Again, if you haven’t yet seen “Once”, rent it. And make art, make art, make art…

Cheers, enjoy, be inspired, and have a wonderful week…

And thanks to John Stewart for doing the right thing, and allowing for what may have been the best speech of the evening.

nantes

One of the few occasions that my preference is to share a recorded version over a live, in spite of the fact that their videos are for the most part live and more organic than most… nonetheless I introduce you to the studio rendition of Nantes by Beirut. Hope you likey…

And for those aficionados of the more organic, have a look and listen, and check out their website link above for more great music. Peace.

invisible sun

There has to be an invisible sun. It gives its heat to everyone.
There has to be an invisible sun. That gives us hope when the whole days done.

It’s been wetter and colder and grayer than usual here in Southern CA, even for February… so on the heels of a total eclipse of the moon last night (the clouds parted just enough to see), today I was thinking about the Invisible Sun. Oh its out there, and it’ll show itself again soon. For now though, I thought it an apt time to post this Police classic.

All I want is a place somewhere far away from the cold night air“.

It’s not even that cold here. I don’t know how Chicagoans do it but God bless ‘em, and our troops still entrenched in this effed up war, and the people of Darfur and Kenya and everyone everywhere else who doesn’t have it remotely as good as we - as I, do. Wherever you are, I hope you’re safe and warm. Enjoy.

black kids from florida

By the Jacksonville band Black Kids, a live performance of their debut single “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You” (that would be asking a bit much, no?). Enjoy, and click on the link to their site for a free mp3 download of their entire EP, Wizard of Ahhhs, including this one as well as Hurricane Jane and Hit the Heartbrakes…

Ahhh yes, it’s Valentines Eve. Have a happy…

Here’s one of those new songs I mentioned. So new, in fact, that it’s not yet available on itunes. I believe March 18 is the official drop date, so take note and keep your eyes open for this new CD by Devotchka. For now I hope you enjoy what I’ll deem a touching song in the tone of both bitter and sweet. Have a beautiful day, and mean what you say.

dancing on our graves

Hello everyone, thanks for checking in and to those of you who’ve written to inquire, checking on me. Yes, it’s been awhile since I’ve posted anything. I’ve been out of town, time and sorts (sorta) on and off for these last few weeks, and it hasn’t helped that much of the new music out there has left me oddly uninspired of late, with the exceptions of some stuff that’s not available in music video form as yet, i.e. the very new, obscure and unique. I look forward to sharing some of that stuff with you soon. There is a plan. For now, here’s a little something by the Cave Singers that’s altogether admirable, both musically and visually. Feel free to tap your toes, but please think real hard before dancing on any graves. Enjoy, have a great week, thanks again for checking in, and see you again soon. Peace be with you.
